Duct Tape Flowers- Thrifty Valentine’s Day

Duct tape flowers are a fun and easy project especially considering the varied colors of duct tape available these days.   In WalMart last night I found everything from bright pink to animal print duct tape!  Perfect for a flower project.
Duct tape was invented by Johnson and Johnson Company during WWII to keep moisture out of ammo cases.  Originally it was known as “duck” tape because it was made from cotton duck and was waterproof.  It first came out in Army green but after the war the color was changed to silver since most builders were using it to connect electrical ducts. Because of this, the name gradually changed to “duct” tape.Making A Duct Tape Flower:
  1. Measure the width of the duct tape. Straighten out the wire, and cut 10 pieces of wire that are 1/2 inch longer than the duct tape’s width.
  2. Measure and cut off a 12 inch long strip of the duct tape and place it sticky side up on a flat work surface
  3. Making sure each piece of wire is as straight as possible, place a piece of wire about 3/4 inch from the end of the duct tape. The wire should just touch the edge of the duct tape and stick out about 1/2 inch over the other. Then place the rest of the wire pieces about 1 1/2 inches apart down the rest of the length of the duct tape.
  4. Cut another 12 inch piece of duct tape and place it, sticky side down, on top of the first piece of tape, being sure to match up the edges as close as possible
  5. Measuring about 3/4 from each side of the first piece of wire, cut the tape so that each wire has 3/4 of tape on either side of it. (It will look like a square duct tape lollipop.) These will be your petals.
  6. With your scissors, trim the duct tape squares into the shape of the petals you want. You can make them long and skinny, heart-shaped, or rose petal shaped. Make sure, however, that the thickest end of your petal is on the end where the wire sticks out
  7. Make a stamen or two by cutting off strips of wire a little longer than the petals. You can leave them straight, or curl the ends around a pen or pencil.
  8. If you want to make leaves for your flower, make them now using the same steps as above, but using green duct tape. Do not make as many leaves as petals and make sure you cut the leaves in a different shape than the petals.
Putting the Flower Together:
Gather all of the petals together, making sure that the bottom of the petals are evenly lined up. Place the stamen in the middle of the petals.

Using the floral wire, begin wrapping the bundle near the bottom of the petals. Wrap tightly, overlapping the wire a little closest to the petals to make it look authentic. Continue wrapping the bundle until you get to the end and cut off the floral wire.

Using the floral tape, begin wrapping the tape around the floral wire, overlapping the tape slightly to make sure all the wire is covered.

Add one or two leaves, either staggered or directly opposite each other, starting about 3/4 inch down from the petals and add as many as you like, taping each one to the main bundle with floral tape.

Begin carefully spreading the petals out, bending them slightly and arrange them in the way you want them. Arrange the appearance of the leaves the same way. Each flower can be used alone or make a number of them, the same or different, and use as a bouquet.

Shirley’s Attic – Mason City, IA –

Every time I’m in Mason City I have to stop at Shirley’s Attic. It’s usually because I need a warm sweater or jacket– I live in California now so my sweater collection has dwindled over the years. And sometimes 20 degrees BELOW zero can sneak up on a person!! (like it did for me last year)

I love browsing thru the racks in Shirley’s Attic. Everything is colorized and organized by item type. I found some fantastic leather jackets when I was there over the holidays. I also spotted a few cute jeans and tops. My all time favorite is the awesome sweater I scored for a mere $5. Cold weather is not so bad when you have a fashionable sweater to wear!

Here is a photo of me wearing my $5 sweater.

Make Your Own Peanut Butter At Home

Fabulous Food Friday! Making peanut butter from scratch- what a great idea!! I’m definitely planning to try this myself. I’m really trying to cut back on sugar consumption and this sounds like a good start. Happy Friday everyone. Make it a great day!

I haven’t bought peanut butter in over a year! I make it fresh, and made to order whenever I need it for a recipe…or a sandwich. It takes less than five minutes.

My Fabulous CVS Drugstore Find!

Do you ever wake up in the morning with “raccoon eyes”? Eyes puffy and tired looking? Okay, I admit I’ve been there. I tried the obvious like getting more sleep and drinking more water but those were tiny fixes. At one point I was pretty sure I needed to schedule some time with the plastic surgeon!! (but how do you finance plastic surgery on a slim budget??)

Lucky me– I was out on a walk earlier this week and happened to stop by my local CVS drugstore for some retail therapy. As luck would have it I found a miracle in a tiny container– Garnier Skin Renew Anti Dark-Circle Roller. I figured for $12 it was worth a try. Definitely fit into my thrift shopping mindset.

I’ve been using this for the past three days. All I can say is– amazing! It looks like I won’t have to schedule time with the surgeon for awhile.

Dumpster Diving – University City – San Diego

My motto– if you’re planning to dumpster dive– do it with dignity. I’m not a big fan of physically diving into dumpsters. Mostly out of fear.

I prefer to walk by and if there is something interesting laying out front of the dumpster or perched within easy reach then I grab the item and give it a visual scan. Personally, the item needs to be in good condition and something I can put to immediate use or else I leave it.

Here is a cute table I found recently in the UTC area near Nobel Drive and Lebon Drive. It was set out front of the dumpster within easy reach. Very cute table. The only thing I had to do was dust it off and replace the drawer pull. The cost of drawer pull was $2.75 at Cost Plus World Market. Again, a really simple fix and now I have a cute table in my entryway!

Have you ever felt like someone was following you? Seen the same car a few too many times? Tird of feeling scared and powerless?

Typically I write about shopping for great deals on clothes or home items but today wanted to get some good information out to my readers on self-protection– while still  staying true to my “thrift shopping” theme. I’m planning to touch on this self-protection them periodically as I feel it’s an important topic.  I recently came across a statistic saying that 75% of stalking victims know their stalker!! (It’s not always “stranger danger” out there)

I found a well-stocked source of “tools” to help anyone feel a little bit safer.   The Pepper Spray Center is a great site to shop for stun guns, pepper spray and home protection items.

How would you feel if this happened to you??

March 3, 2011. Derry, New Hampshire Police reported that another store robbery was thwarted by simple pepper spray.
A man walked into convenient store in Derry, NH and demanded cash from the store owner. The store owner sprayed the would-be robber in the face with pepper spray instead.

What happened next illustrates how pepper spray affects people’s physiology, reflexes and behavior. The store owner was able to contact police and give a description of the robber and vehicle used.  So you see– a simple tool like pepper spray seriously disoriented this would-be robber.

Here you have it:
When hit with pepper spray a person is seriously disoriented:
– it’s hard to open the eyes, it’s hard to see what’s around, some report nearly complete blackout;
– it’s hard to breathe, pepper spray dilates membranes in nasal passages that may restrict air flow into the lungs;
– sharp acute pain does not allow to concentrate on anything, everything is burning and demands immediate relief as first priority.

Check out this fabulous self-protection tool I found at www.pepperspraycenter.com:

Pepper Blaster II, Kimber Pepper Spray Gun, Guardian Angel - Click Image to Close

Pepper Blaster II, Kimber Pepper Spray Guardian Angel $38.97 (27% off)

This item is available in Red or Gray (pictured).

The Pepper Blaster shoots pepper spray (actually pepper gel) towards the attacker using its own drive. Women love it!  Because the shot is so quick it is impossible for the aggressor to dodge it or block it.  It is impossible to run away.
