UCP Thrift Store – Pacific Beach

Fashion without limits for all people on a budget! I was thrilled when I stepped into the United Cerebral Palsy Thrift Store in the Pacific Beach neighborhood of San Diego.  Boots, jeans, cute shoes, jackets galore and awesome dresses.  They also had a decent selection of kitchenwares and miscellaneous household items.  Of course, this is one of those places where the fun is in the thrill of the hunt.

Looking good and helping people is always a good combination.  United Cerebral Palsy is one of the largest and most efficient health charities in America.  Their affiliates in San Diego County spend approximately 85% of total income on community programs and services.

It’s a sure thing I will stop by this place again– there is plenty of selection and the store is clean and well-organized.  Happy Shopping!  Below are some photos I took of different  items I found while shopping at the UCP Thrift Store.

Fashion Finds – Goodwill Industries – Pacific Beach

Are you wondering what to wear to that 80’s theme party you just heard about? Need a dress for the office? Or maybe just shopping for some gently used kitchen wares? Have I got the place for you– the Goodwill store in the Pacific Beach area of San Diego was stocked with lots of amazing choices for all of the above. I even found some decent golf clubs. And some pretty wine glasses. And a new popcorn popper. The jeans selection was quite good too. There was a rack of jeans 75% off in front of the store and of course like anything else it’s the thrill of the hunt. There’s everything from the possibility of Paige jeans $7.99 to jeans from Old Navy for $2.50– best to be alert and be ready to search!

Even more awesome, military, students and senior citizens get a 10% discount (with ID). The staff was friendly and helpful and the store was basically well-laid out and organized. It was an easy place to shop. Whether you’re looking for a wacky puffy vest or some “Hollywood hip” wear for a theme party– the Goodwill is a wonderful place to shop. Check out some of the items I found….

Shirley’s Attic – Mason City, IA –

Every time I’m in Mason City I have to stop at Shirley’s Attic. It’s usually because I need a warm sweater or jacket– I live in California now so my sweater collection has dwindled over the years. And sometimes 20 degrees BELOW zero can sneak up on a person!! (like it did for me last year)

I love browsing thru the racks in Shirley’s Attic. Everything is colorized and organized by item type. I found some fantastic leather jackets when I was there over the holidays. I also spotted a few cute jeans and tops. My all time favorite is the awesome sweater I scored for a mere $5. Cold weather is not so bad when you have a fashionable sweater to wear!

Here is a photo of me wearing my $5 sweater.

How do you spell fantastic– yes– My Act II, Inc.  Nestled in picturesque La Mesa I was lucky enough to find this amazing shop.

What can you get for $50?  My friend recently scored a hoodie, a blouse, 3 tank tops and mucho jewelry.  Right now the rings are $1. Shopping here means you won’t be breaking the bank to look amazing.

Be prepared for the thrill of the hunt– there are literally hundreds of jeans– bling bling and more. I was excited to see a decent selection of Plus sizes which can be difficult to find in consignment shops.

The beautifully styled window says it all– stop by this shop and check out the fabulous items My Act II has to offer!

Affordables – Mason City, Iowa

Affordables

Mason City, Iowa

Phone# 641-423-7071

You gotta love Affordables in Mason City! I stop by this place every time I’m in town.  Affordables does restock over 300 different items daily and serves an average of 150 to 200 customers each day. For me during this trip, I saw some older style sweaters, holiday stuff (after all I was there during Christmas break), and there was some odd kitchen items. This trip I didn’t walk out with any purchases. But that’s okay since the fun of thrift shopping is the thrill of the hunt!

However, last year I walked out of Affordables with a fabulous jean jacket that I scored for a mere $5.00- how cool is that!!  That’s me wearing the $5 jacket. It’s so cute and I wear it all the time!

This shop sits near the North End in Mason City and all proceeds benefit the North Iowa Vocational Center.  Affordables is a resale shop that provides training and employment for people with disabilities.  The people working there are friendly and it’s just good karma to support their cause.  Last year the store contributed donations to 25 families and 2 agencies to help people who suffered losses from fires and natural disasters.

Bravo! I’ll be back the next time I’m in North Iowa!

Electronic recycling heads up!

Jennifer's avatarAttempting zero waste lifestyle in a military household

What do you do with your electronics when they lie sputtered and spent? What can you do with them? And all that paper the city won’t recycle?

It’s the NEW year! Get rid of some stuff without throwing it in the trash can.

The environmental group ‘EarthKeepers’ sponsored an e-scrap recycling event last year in downtown St. Marys, GA. Guess how much they collected?

Cutting Out The Ugly

I love this blog post about “cutting out the ugly” in our lives.

Happy 2012 and let’s all make it a beautiful year in every way.

Is The Pawn Shop The New Spot For Holiday Shopping?

Is The Pawn Shop The New Spot For Holiday Shopping? « CBS Detroit.

I found this article yesterday while browsing online.  I’m a big fan of shopping at the pawn shop.  A few years ago I found a beautiful ring at a pawn shop in the Midwest for $75– I wear it all the time and people have no idea this piece of jewelry came from a pawn shop.  (my little secret!)
Here is my “pawn shop ring”—
