Tonite I stopped by the DSW store in my neighborhood. I had a $20 rewards coupon from them that was on the verge of expiring– my plan was to take a quick scan thru the place and if I found something– great– and if not- oh well. I had a vision of some black boots in my head but not so sure the shopping karma would be on my side.

There were many rows of Fall-worthy boots. And karma was with me when I found several options in black & in the size 7 that I needed. Success! The best part was when I saw the price was marked $59. Fabulous for my pocketbook and even better when I figured in the $20 coupon. This “accidental shopping trip” was turning out pretty good!

So, I made my way to the cashier ready to hand over my coupon and credit card. Mentally I was guessing I’d be spending about $43 with taxes included. When the cashier told me $53- I was confused but chalked it up to a long day and maybe I didn’t read the sign right? Needless to say I allowed myself to keep quiet, follow along and just pony up the $53. Thank you-good bye- end of story?? Uh… No.

I packed up my wallet, calmly put away my credit card, picked up my shopping bag and decided to take a detour on the way out the door. Did I really read that sign so wrong?? Turns out I’m not crazy that sign really did say $59! Which means I was over charged! What to do? Easy answer for me– I danced back over to the cashier to tell her my findings. She was sure I was wrong and sure her magical scanner was right. The good news is- I really can read numbers & the sign said $59. Looks like that scanner wasn’t so perfect after all.

At this point in the story I have to give a big shout out to my local DSW store here in La Jolla. They honored the sign that was posted $59 for my fabulous black boots, allowed me to use the $20 rewards coupon and credited me back for their error. Thus, my boots really did come out to $39.95 before taxes. A happy ending!

Bottom line- there are lots of really cute Fall boots at DSW right now. In fact I have my eye on 2 more pair. Here is a photo of the black boots I purchased tonite.

Creative Ways to Downsize Your Life

Downsizing your life may bring you surprising benefits including more personal time and greater happiness. There is much you can do for little money without having to live like a pauper. The following suggestions are a good start towards downsizing your life:

  • Cancel pricey appointments & services. Take time to evaluate those expensive salon visits. Pick your poison–if getting your hair done is non-negotiable then how about learning how to do the manicure and pedicure at home?
  • Ditch the dry cleaning. Get rid of clothes that need to be dry cleaned, unless they are for a special occasion.
  • Cut back on extra activities. Giving those extra activities a break for a few months not only saves money but also reduces stress.
  • Reduce social obligations. Take a look at which friends bring the most to your life and which ones drain you emotionally and financially.
  • Buy second-hand. Many items can be purchased second-hand and are just as good as getting brand new.
  • Reuse. Before you throw anything away, stop and think about how you might re-purpose it. This habit will save you money, keep clutter in check and help the environment.
  • Make gifts. A handmade gift often means more to the receiver than one bought at a store.
  • Say no. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. It will only stress you out.
  • Family time. Learn to prioritize so you can spend time with the people you love every day. Have dinner, play games, exercise, or just sit down and chat.

Leather is a perfect addition to a Fall jacket wardrobe

Check out my fantastic leather jacket!! I got a great deal at San Diego Leather, Inc in National City.

The jacket is totally handmade. Since I have short arms it was nice to take care of the “tailoring” right away.  I tried on dozens of jackets in the store before deciding on this style and color (black).  I think this is the best leather jacket I’ve ever had quality wise– it smells so good!  I’m actually hoping the weather cools down soon so I can wear it finally.

The store guarantees the stitching for 10 years and the zipper for 5 years although as well made as my jacket is– it’s doubtful that this is even necessary.

In addition to leather jackets, they carry boots, pants, mens and women’s fashion leather and police type leather jackets.  I really still can’t believe that my jacket was handmade– by real people– in the USA.

I tend to get attached to certain items– so definitely will be posting more photos as I “wear” my new jacket.   (I can’t believe I’m writing this— but, I can’t wait for winter!!!!)

Salvation Army Store No 6 & Boutique

I walked into the Salvation Army “boutique” on Sports Arena Boulevard with low expectations and was surprised that I actually found a few cute items.  There is really no sense of order in this place so be prepared to “dig.”

I was greeted by a lot of furniture and assorted odds and ends right off the bat.  As far as furniture is concerned– most of it was old and kind of messed up.  There was a men’s section, a kids section and a section for assorted housewares/kitchenwares. There was a new kids bike that was priced at $29- someone grabbed that right in front of my eyes!

Of course, there was plenty of women’s clothing and shoes.  The clothing was a mixed bag of really weird, dirty items and a few nicer things tossed in.  Again, be prepared to dig thru the weird items and there is the occasional decent outfit to be found.  I found a skirt and top that would definitely be wearable– the top & skirt were $6.49 for each item- extremely budget friendly.
